Secondary school Sancta Maria Haarlem

Secondary school Sancta Maria Haarlem

Through half day climate & design workshops, the students of the Sancta Maria have truly co-designed their schoolyard. The Sancta Maria college in Haarlem lays in an area pointed as 1 of the 20 rain flood stress-locations in Haarlem, meaning climate adaptation interventions must be taken. A schoolwide survey formed their list of requirements, our climate class showed students the need for adaptational design, and taught them options. The following design workshop in which students followed the design-cycle, enabled students to come up with creative ideas how to renovate their schoolyard according to their own needs and simultaneously adapt to the changing climatological needs. We integrated their input into a preliminary design. We have presented students’ ideas and the design presentation to the Haarlem municipality, currently we are collaborating in order to construct the first phase.
